The national currency of Romania is Leu (Lei in plural) in bills and its divisions are Bani in coins. Many times instead of the word Leu / Lei the acronym RON is used for the price. For instance, if the price of an object is 15.50 RON, then the object costs 15 lei and 50 bani. For reference, we advise you to change approximately 100 euro / pounds into lei, in your country, before coming to Romania, for the expenses during the first hours (for taxi, train, a snack etc.), so that you should not have to look for a bank, especially if you arrive late at night. Moreover, we recommend you change money only in bank agencies and avoid exchange offices and especially people who may offer you a convenient exchange rate. The prices in Romania are significantly lower than in other countries, especially in food products or services. For instance, in Iasi a bread loaf costs around 2 lei, a beer is approximately 7 lei, and a 15-minute taxi drive is about 10 lei.
